  • Description

Stirling Moss (UK), in his first race since sustaining injuries practising for the BELGIAN Grand Prix in June, won the international sports car event at Karlskoga, Sweden, Aug 7, driving a Lotus.

The race started Le Mans style - drivers running to cars and jumping in. Moss sprinted to his car - despite ribs, nose and legs broken - made a flying start, and soon found himself involved in a duel with Maserati-driver Bonnier (Sweden). Twice passed, he finally took the lead, and won with six seconds to spare at an average speed of 67.9 m.p.h., breaking a lap record at 69.4 m.p.h. Bonnier was second and Piper (UK) in a Lotus, third.

Standing to receive cheers of 40,000 spectators, Moss said he was happy and satisfied. The Le Mans start had worried him, but he had managed, and felt no ill-effects from his injuries. A group of wellwishers mobbed him as he got out of his car.

The sports car race did not count for the world championship. Moss will race in the championship-class Portuguese Grand Prix at Oporto. Aug 14. He lies third in the championship table with 11 points to leader Jack Brabham's 32.
