  • Description

The Chilean mission to Bolivia is now back home, following the breakdown of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Chilean diplomats left La Paz airport on Saturday (18 March).

SYNOPSIS: It was the latest incident in a dispute between Chile and Bolivia which goes back for a century, when the war of the Pacific deprived Bolivia of its only outlet to the sea. Diplomatic relations have been broken off many times before, most recently for thirteen years between 1962 and 1975. The discussions which have taken place on Bolivia's land-locked situation since then now appear to have broken down entirely. But the border between the two countries is still quiet, and trains are running normally.

The Chilean diplomats and their families left La Paz only a day after Bolivia broke off relations. The Bolivian President, General Hugo Banzer, said he had made the move because Chile was not seeking a real answer to the problem of Bolivia's lack of access to the sea. But the Chilean foreign ministry has reacted with surprise, saying there was no development leading up to what it termed the "unusual decision".
