• Short Summary

THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON, WAS IN THE SEASIDE RESORT TOWN OF BRIGHTON TODAY?

  • Description

THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON, WAS IN THE SEASIDE RESORT TOWN OF BRIGHTON TODAY (SUNDAY) ON THE EVE OF HIS RULING LABOUR PARTY'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE, AND TWICE HE HAD TO FACE DEMONSTRATORS.

THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION CAME IN A BRIGHTON METHODIST CHURCH, WHERE THE PRIME MINISTER WAS READING THE LESSON. THE FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. GEORGE BROWN, HAD ALREADY READ FROM THE BIBLE DURING THE SERVICE, TRADITIONALLY HELD ON THE DAY BEFORE THE PARTY CONFERENCE STARTS. BUT WHEN MR. WILSON STARTED HIS READING, THERE WERE SHOUTS OF "MURDERER", "HYPOCRITE" AND "VIETNAM".

POLICE WERE QUICKLY ON THE SCENE, BUT REMOVING THE DEMONSTRATORS WASN'T EASY. SOME YOUNG WOMEN LAY DOWN IN THE AISLES, AND MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION PULLED THEIR HAIR AS POLICE DRAGGED THEM OUT OF THE CHURCH.

MR. WILSON TRIED TO MAKE HIMSELF HEARD ABOVE THE UPROAR, BUT EVENTUALLY ABANDONED HIS READING AND SAT DOWN. BRIGHTON POLICE SAID LATER THAT FIVE MEN AND FOUR WOMEN WOULD APPEAR IN COURT CHARGED WITH OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE AND UNRULY BEHAVIOUR.

MRS. KATHLEEN FARR, LEADER OF THE VIETNAM ACTION GROUP, SAID IN LONDON THAT THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED TO DRAW ATTENTION, AS SHE PUT IT, TO WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN VIETNAM, AND BRITISH COMPLICITY IN AMERICAN POLICY THERE.

LATER MR. WILSON AND HIS WIFE HEARD OUT THE INTERRUPTED SERVICE, AND LEFT THE CHURCH. BUT IT WASN'T THE END OF DEMONSTRATIONS FOR HIM. LATER THERE WERE MORE ORDERLY DEMONSTRATORS, WITH PLACARDS THIS TIME, ATTACKING THE GOVERNMENT'S ECONOMIC POLICIES AND UNITED STATES ACTIONS IN VIETNAM. AMONG THEM WAS MR. BUSUKE SHIMOE, A SURVIVOR OF THE AMERICAN ATOM BOMB ATTACK ON HIROSHIMA, AND MRS. ANNE KERR, A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT.

(DURING THE WEEK-LONG CONFERENCE THERE WILL BE DEBATES BOTH ON MR. WILSON'S FOREIGN POLICY AND ON HIS HANDLING OF THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES.)
(RESOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN PUT FORWARD CRITICISING HIM ON BOTH ISSUES, BUT HE HAS ALREADY WON A DECLARATION OF SUPPORT FROM THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE OF THE PARTY ON HIS OVERSEAS POLICIES, AND BACKING FOR THE FREEZE ON WAGE AND PRICE INCREASES).
