    PORSCHE TOOK FIRST AND SECOND PLACES IN THE NUERBURGRING 1,000 KILOMETRES SPORTS CAR RACE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), VIRTUALLY SECURING THE MANUFACTURER'S 1968 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. BRITAIN'S VIC ELFORD AND SWISS ACE JOE SIFFERT SCORED A CONVINCING WIN IN THE THREE-LITRE PORSCHE PROTOTYPE No. 2 AND, NEARLY HALF A LAP BEHIND THEM, CAME THE 2.2 LITRE PORSCHE OF WEST GERMANS, HANS HERMANN AND ROLF STOMMELEN.

    THE RACE HAD BEEN EXPECTED TO BECOME A HEAD-ON CLASH BETWEEN THE MOTOR-RACING GIANTS. PORSCHE AND FORD, WHO MET FOR THE SIXTH TIME THIS SEASON. HOWEVER, FOR SUFFERED A MAJOR SETBACK BEFORE THE RACE WHEN, ON SATURDAY, CHRIS IRWIN HURTLED OFF THE TRACK DURING A PRACTICE LAP IN ONE OF THE COSWORTH PROTOTYPES, FORD'S BIG HOPE IN THE RACE. THEN, WITH ONLY SEVEN LAPS OF THE RACE GONE YESTERDAY, THE REMAINING COSWORTH DEVELOPED ENGINE TROUBLE AND DROPPED OUT. FORD HAD TO BE CONTENT WITH A THIRD PLACE, SCORED BY THE GT40 OF BELGIAN JACKY ICKX AND AUSTRALIAN PAUL HAWKINS.

    THE WINNING TEAM OF ELFORD AND SIFFERT PILOTED THE POWERFUL PORSCHE OVER THE 44 LAPS OF THE 14 MILE (22.8 KMS.) COURSE AT A RECORD AVERAGE SPEED OF 96.05 M.P.H. (152.96 K.P.H.)
    YESTERDAY'S WIN WAS ELFORD'S THIRD THIS YEAR AT THE WHEEL OF A WORKS PORSCHE. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY TRIUMPHED AT DAYTONA BEACH AND THE TARGA FLORIA IN SICILY. HE ALSO WON THE MONTE CARLO RALLY IN A PORSHE.

    GUICHET AND KILLY, IN ANOTHER PORSCHE (No. 112) WERE UNPLACED IN THE EVENT.
