  • Description

DEMONSTRATORS CARRYING FRENCH, AMERICAN, CANADIAN AND BRITISH FLAGS GATHERED AT THE PLACE DU TROCADERO IN PARIS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FOR A MASS RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE. IN THE FOREFRONT OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS MISS JOSEPHINE BAKER, THE AMERICAN-BORN NEGRO SINGER.

THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED BANNERS READING "NO TO ANARCHY" AND "REVOLUTION WITH DE GAULLE". POLICE ESTIMATED THE CROWD AT 10,000 AT THE START BUT RAIN AND MASSIVE TRAFFIC JAMS REDUCED IT TO ABOUT 5,000 BY THE TIME IT DISPERSED AFTER CROSSING THE SEINE.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS CALLED BY THE "MAY 30 MOVEMENT", AN ORGANISATION FORMED AFTER THE MASSIVE GAULLIST RALLY ON THE CHAMPS ELYSEES LAST THURSDAY, AND LED BY FORMER MINISTER ROGER FREY.
