SEVENTY-NINE PEOPLE -- MOSTLY CHILDREN BOUND FOR HOLIDAYS -- DIED TODAY (THURSDAY) NEAR MAGDEBURG IN EAST GERMANY WHEN A TRAIN SMASHED INTO A PETROL TANKER ON A LEVEL CROSSING AND WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES.

AS THE TRAIN PLOUGHED INTO THE TANKER IT SENT A SEA OF BURNING PETROL OVER THE FIRST DOUBLE-DECK COACH IN WHICH THE CHILDREN WERE TRAVELLING ON THEIR WAY TO A HOLIDAY IN THE HARZ MOUNTAINS.

A DOCTOR AT THE SCENE SAID THE CHILDREN, BELIEVED TO BE FROM MAGDEBURG, WERE TRAPPED INSIDE. HE SAID: "IT WAS A HORRIBLE SCENE. SOME OF THE WINDOWS WERE OPEN AND PEOPLE HEARD THE CHILDREN SCREAMING INSIDE."
THE DOCTOR SAID THE SECOND COACH WAS ALSO COMPLETELY BURNED OUT BUT THE FOLLOWING TWO DID NOT APPEAR TO BE AS SEVERELY DAMAGED.

THE EAST GERMANY NEWS AGENCY, AND, SAID THE DEATH TOLL WAS 79 AFTER RESCUE WORK HAD BEEN COMPLETED. MANY INJURED ADULTS AND CHILDREN TONIGHT WERE BEING TREATED FOR BURNS IN NEIGHBOURING HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS' SURGERIES.

THE AGENCY ADDED THAT THE LEVEL CROSSING ATTENDANT HAD BEEN DETAINED ON SUSPICION OF NEGLECTING HIS DUTIES.
