  • Description

SOME THREE THOUSAND STUDENTS PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS IN DJAKARTA IN SATURDAY PROTESTING AGAINST PRESIDENT SUKARNO AND THE DEATH OF ONE OF THE COLLEAGUES IN RIOTING AT BANDUNG IN CENTRAL JAVA.

THE STUDENTS CALLED ON PRESIDENT SUKARNO TO STEP DOWN AND MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS DEMANDING THAT FLAGS STILL FLYING FROM THE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS BE LOWERED TO HALF MAST TO MARK THE DEATH OF THE BANDUNG STUDENT.

THE CRITICISM OF THE PRESIDENT FOLLOWS HIS SPEECH ON INDONESIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY. IN IT HE SAID INDONESIA WOULD RECOGNISE MALAYSIA ONLY AFTER GENERAL ELECTIONS IN SABAH AND SARAWAK AND WOULD NOT REJOIN THE UNITED NATIONS IMMEDIATELY.

ARMED TROOPS WATCHED AS STUDENTS MARCHED CARRYING BANNERS SAYING "THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH DOES NOT BENEFIT THE PEOPLE".

THE DEAD STUDENT WAS SHOT WHEN PRO-COMMUNIST SUKARNO SUPPORTERS TRIED TO STORM THE BANDUNG UNIVERSITY AND THE HEADQUARTERS OF KAMI (THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ACTION COMMAND) LAST FRIDAY. FIFTEEN OTHER STUDENTS WERE INJURED, SOME SERIOUSLY IN THE INCIDENT.)
