Background: The Greek national soccer champions, Olympiacos-Piraeus beat Anderlecht of Belgium 3 goals to nil in their second-round European Cup match at Patras in Greece on Wednesday (6 November).

But the Greeks failed to qualify for the Cup quarter finals.

Olympiacos were beaten five goals to one by Anderlecht in Brussels late in October. The Greeks needed to score at lest four goals against Anderlecht in the return match on their home ground.

The Greeks in fact scored the four goals -- but one of them was ruled off-side. This led to some bitterness among the Greek players who verbally abused the referee after the match.

All three Olympiacos goals were scored by Galakos, who played the outstanding game of the match. The Greek challenge lost much of its impetus after the 68th minute when Stavropoulos was sent off for rough tackling.

Anderlecht qualified to go into the quarter finals to be played in Zurich in January next year. The European Cup final itself will be played at Hampden Park stadium in Glasgow the following May.
