    Background: JAPAN LAUNCHED HER FIRST MISSILE-ARMED DESTROYER LAST WEEK. THE DEADLY, 3000-TON VESSEL IS THE BIGGEST WARSHIP BUILT IN JAPAN SINCE WORLD WAR II. IT HAS A SPEED OF 33 KNOTS, AND IS ARMED WITH SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILES, FOUR THREE-INCH GUNS, TORPEDO TUBES AND DEPTH-CHARGE LAUNCHERS.

    THE DESTROYER, WHICH COST GBP8 MILLION, WAS LAUNCHED BY MR. YOZO KATO, JAPANESE DEFENCE MINISTRY OFFICIAL, BEFORE A BIG CROWD AT THE MITSUBISHI SHIPYARDS IN NAGASAKI. IT WAS NAMED 'AMATSUKAZE.'
