  • Description

A WHEEL WHICH REQUIRES NO PNEUMATIC TYRE, YET WHICH PROVIDES COMPARABLE SPRINGING EFFECTS, IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING TESTS AT THE STUTTGART RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN WEST GERMANY. DEVELOPED BY LEOPOLD SCHMID, IN CHARGE OF CHASSIS AND ENGINE CONSTRUCTION AT THE "PORSCHE" CAR FACTORY, THE WHEEL CONSISTS OF A SOLID RUBBER RING.

THIS FORMS THE RUNNING SURFACE OF THE TYRE, AND IS ANCHORED TO A METAL DISC BY 16 RUBBER "FINGERS" WHICH PROVIDE THE SPRINGING. AS THE WHEEL IS DEPRESSED. AT THE POINT WHERE IT TOUCHES THE GROUND - THE DISC SLIDES DOWN OVER THE RUBBER "FINGER", RETURNING TO ITS NORMAL (UNLOADED) POSITION WHEN THAT PARTICULAR PART OF THE WHEEL NO LONGER TOUCHES THE ROAD.

THE WHEEL IS ABOUT FORTY PER CENT LIGHTER AND MUCH THINNER THAN PRESENT AIR-FILLED TYRE DESIGNS. TO DATE, IT HAS PRIMARILY BEEN TESTED AS A SPARE TYRE. A T-SHAPED LIGHT ALLOY RING IS VULCANISED INTO THE RUBBER RIM TO PROVIDE STIFFNESS. ANOTHER ALLOY CASTING RUNS PARALLEL TO THE WHEEL DISC, PROVIDING A CHANNEL IN WHICH THE RUBBER "FINGERS" MOVE.

IT HAS A LIFE OF APPROXIMATELY 4,000 MILES. IT COULD ALSO BE USED FOR INDUSTRIAL AND MILITARY VEHICLES AND FOR AIRCRAFT. WITH HIS WHEEL AS A BASIS, SCHMID HAS PRODUCED THE DESIGN FOR A VEHICLE TO BREAK THE LAND SPEED RECORD - AND BY SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR.
