  • Description

A brand-new test hangar for high-power turboprop engines has just been opened at Vancouver, British Columbia, by Bristol Aero-Engines (Western) Limited.

The inaugural ceremony was performed by Mr Grant W G McConachie, President of Canadian Pacific Airlines, which will use the Britannia airliner on its over-the-Pole route from Vancouver to Europe. Bristol Aero-Engines (Western) Ltd will overhaul the 4,120 horsepower Proteus engines in these aircraft. It has already great experience of the overhaul of aero-engines, including the Bristol Hercules, and is the first company in Canada to overhaul high-power turboprop engines.

The new test hangar is used for checking the Proteus engines after they have been overhauled, before they are reinstalled in the Britannia.

Some of the key men in the company, including the Vice-President, Mr Jack Holt, and his assistant Mr Jim Hutton, came from the parent company at Bristol.

The test hangar has two cells, each 25 foot square, in which the Proteus engines will be mounted on a wing section frame stretching between the side walls. Fuel storage is provided for 15,000 gallons of aviation kerosene.
