  • Description

Blackjack -- the horse who captured the hearts of thousands of viewers throughout the United States during the televised funeral procession of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 -- celebrated his 28th birthday on Thursday (16 January).

The United States' Army's most famous equine recruit lives in semi-retirement now in Fort Myers, Virginia. To mark the occasion, hundreds of admirers, old and young, visited Blackjack, and watched as he ate his birthday cake.

Blackjack is no stranger to the public gaze. He has taken part in the state funeral processions of Presidents Herbert Hoover and Lyndon B. Johnson, and General Douglas Macarthur, in addition to President Kennedy's.

The sprightly 28-year-old -- more than 98 years old in comparative human terms -- remains just as spirited in 1975 as he ever was.
