  • Description

U.S. TROOPS AND A COUPLE OF BATHING BEAUTIES DEMONSTRATED A 'WALKING ON WATER' TECHNIQUE FOR DEFENSE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS, JUNE 26. THE DEMONSTRATION TOOK PLACE ON THE PENTAGON LAGOON IN WASHINGTON.

SMALL FLOATS MADE OF RIGID URETHANE FOAM ATTACHED TO THE SOLDIERS' FEET ENABLED THE MEN TO WALK ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE LAGOON ALMOST AS EASILY AS IF THEY WERE ON DRY LAND. THE FLOATS WOULD BE OF PARTICULAR USE TO TROOPS IN SWAMPY TERRAIN. A WOUNDED MAN CAN BE STRAPPED TO TWO FLOATS AND PULLED ACROSS WATER BY A COLLEAGUE; A MAN CAN KEEP HIS BALANCE ON THE FLOATS, EVEN WHEN CARRYING A RIFLE OR EQUIPMENT.

WHEN THE PENTAGON OFFICIALS HAD SEEN THE MILITARY APPLICATIONS OF THE FOAM FLOATS, THEY HAD AN 'OFF DUTY' DISPLAY. GIRLS IN BATHING SUITS, FLASHING ACROSS THE LAGOON ON THEIR FLOATS, SET THE TROOPS OFF ON A PURSUIT WHICH WAS STRICTLY NON-MILITARY.
