  • Description

GABON'S RELATIONS WITH CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE AND WITH THE NETHERLANDS WERE STRENGTHENED LAST WEEK WHEN NEW AMBASSADORS FROM BOTH COUNTRIES FORMALLY PRESENTED THEIR LETTERS OF CREDENTIAL TO PRESIDENT ALBERT-BERNARD BONGO.

THE CEREMONIES AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE LAST SATURDAY (APRIL 25) CAME JUST THREE DAYS AFTER THE GABON LEADERS HAD CONSIDERED REDUCING THEIR OWN DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATION ABROAD.

THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS -- REDUCED IN NUMBER IN APRIL DUE TO CURRENT AUSTERITY MEASURES -- DISCUSSED THE POSSIBLE CLOSURE OF EMBASSIES IN INDUSTRIALISED COUNTRIES WHICH ON LONGER GIVE GABON THE AID IT EXPECTS.

MEANWHILE, NEIGHBOURING CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE ACTED TO STRENGTHEN TIES WITH GABON BY SENDING AS ITS AMBASSADOR M. AUGUSTE MOMBONGO. THE NEW AMBASSADOR OF THE NETHERLANDS IS MR. WILLY SYLVIO JULIEN CAMPAGNE WHOSE RESIDENCE IS IN YAOUNDE.
