    NEARLY 10,000 JAPANESE DEMONSTRATORS - CALLED OUT BY THE OPPOSITION SOCIALIST PARTY AND TRADE UNIONS - RALLIED IN PROTEST OUTSIDE THE BIG AMERICAN NAVAL BASE AT YOKOSUKA, ON SUNDAY, THE PROTEST IS AGAINST THE PROPOSED VISIT OF AMERICAN NUCLEAR SUBMARINES TO JAPANESE PORTS UNDER THE U.S.-JAPAN SECURITY TREATY.

    THE TREATY WAS SIGNED THREE YEARS AGO TO THE ACCOMPANIMENT TO STREET RIOTS THAT BROUGHT THE DOWNFALL OF THE CABINET OF PRIME MINISTER NOBOSUKE KISHI AND FORCED THEN PRESIDENT EISENHOWER TO CALL OFF HIS VISIT TO JAPAN.

    AFTER GIVING THE TRADITIONAL CHEER OF "BANZAI", THE DEMONSTRATORS PICKED UP RED FLAGS AND PLACARDS, BEARING PHOTOGRAPHS OF NUCLEAR SUBMARINES AND CARTOONS DEPICTING THEM AS PREDATORY MONSTERS MENACING JAPAN.MARCHING THROUGH YOKOSUKA AND PAST THE GATES OF THE NAVY BASE.THE DEMONSTRATORS PASSED STREAMERS HOISTED BY SHOPKEEPERS SAYING "WELCOME U.S.A.", AND "WELCOME NAVY".OPPOSITE THE GATES OF BASE, ABOUT 200 JAPANESE RIOT POLICE WERE DRAWN UP.THE PARADE WAS ORDERLY AND IT ENDED IN A SNAKE DANCE.
