Background: Wolfgang von Trips of Germany and co driver Oliver Gendebien of Belgium, won the 45th Targa Florio motor race, near Palermo in their Ferrari, Apr. 30. They finished the 10 lap race over the 448 miles of twisting mountain circuit in 6 hours 57 minutes 39.4. seconds, new record time for the event.
Stirling Moss and Graham Hill, of Britain were in the lead for most of the race looked like winning until their Porsche retired with a broken differential on the last lap. During the closing stages of the race there was a tough duel between Moss and von Trips. It was only when the Porsche pulled up that the German was abe to shoot into the lead.
Earlier Moss set a new lap record of 41 minutes 50.9 seconds and clocked the same times two laps later This was smashed by von Trips who established a time of 40-minutes 3.5 seconds
Joachim Bonnier, of Sweden who won the race last year, and Dan Gurney, of the United States, came second in their Porsche in 7-hours 2 minutes. 3.5 seconds.
