  • Description

Court martial proceedings against 31 Greek officers and soldiers accused of torturing political prisoners opened at Rouf Barracks, Athens on Thursday (7 August).

It is the third major trial now in progress connected with the former Greek military regime.

Most of the accused denied the charge against them.

The court martial heard Public Works Minister Christoforus Stratos, the first of 127 witnesses, say he suffered hallucinations when being questioned after his arrest in 1973 in connection with an abortive Navy mutiny. He said he was kept sleepless for six days and nights and forced to stand up for long periods.

The Athens prosecutor charged the Defence counsel with contempt of court for making a statement when the hearing opened that the outcome had already been decided by the political authority and the court's only task was to pass sentence.

The torture trial opened 11 days after the Athens Civil High Court began trying 20 ringleaders of the fallen military Junta on charges of high treason.

The torture trial was adjourned until Monday.
