  • Description

French authorities set up a huge security screen on Monday (26 January) for a ministerial conference of oil producing countries to prevent a repeat of last month's guerrilla attack of OPEC headquarters in Vienna.

More than five thousand police were mobilised to assure the safety of 13 finance ministers from OPEC who shifted their meeting from Vienna as a precaution.

Police jammed the corridors of the international conference centre just off the Champs Elysees.

Steel barriers sealed off side streets and prevented the public, including newsmen, from approaching the main entrance to the building.

The jittery session was the first OPEC meeting since a commando group captured the world's top oil statesmen. They were later freed in Algiers and Tripoli.
