  • Description

President Joseph Mobutu of Congo-Kinshasa visited Cape Kennedy in Florida -- the heart of the American space programme -- during his visit to the United States earlier this month.

Accompanied by his wife, the leader of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was first taken on a tour of the launching pads at the Cape. From the centre all of America's dramatic space achievements have been initiated. The area is a home and workplace for the army of technicians who work on the space programme.

Inside the control rooms at the centre, President Mobutu was shown the complex electronic equipment with which technicians follow the progress of a space mission. The main space control centre is at Houston in Ta?as but the Cape Kennedy scientists keep a close watch on all launches. More than 30,000 people work at the centre during periods of peak activity.

Training for space missions is also carried out at Cape kennedy and the President and his wife were shown a space simulator where astronauts practise missions. Technicians try to approximate the conditions of space so future space travellers can solve problems they are likely to encounter during actual flights. Pictures of the moon's surface are shown in the simulator to assist the training pilots.

The President then inspected space craft which are being prepared for future space missions. Among them is the Apollo 14 landing module which is due to land on the moon's surface early next year.
