Background: The Prime Minister of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen), Mr. Abdul-Aziz Abdulghani, has gone to algiers fro talks with his Algerian counterpart.

SYNOPSIS: The North Yemeni leader arrived on Monday evening (11 June) and was greeted by Algerian Prime Minister Mohamed Benahmed Abdelghani and other officials. Few details were available about the visit, apart from an announcement by the Algerian press agency (APS) that it would last for several days. The North Yemeni Prime Minister said on arrival that he would take the opportunity while in Algiers to discuss the development of relations between the tow countries. The Prime Ministers share not only the same surname, but also a common concern about Arab World problems. Algeria, under the leadership of President Houari Boumedienne, has said it wants to play a leading???role in solving Third World difficulties.

Mr. Abdul-Aziz Abdulghani became Prime Minister of the Yemen Arab Republic in January 1975. As the former chairman of a bank, he brought to his new post an understanding of his country's economic troubles -- and during his term of office he has seen his country's balance of payments surplus increase and imports grow. But North yemen remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Industry accounts for only five per cent of the gross domestic product and most development has been in agriculture. The government hopes to make the republic self-sufficient in food processing, clothing and construction, but meanwhile must rely on foreign aid.
