  • Description

Nine nations were in Vienna, Austria, on Friday (26th October), to begin this year's World and European Bicycle-Football Championships.

Bicycle-football is a relatively new sport that combines two of europe's most popular competitive activities -- bicycler racing and football. Basically, cycle-ball is a game of football, but instead of a player using his body to control and direct the ball, he must use the wheels of his bicycle.

Play is on a hard-wood floor, with each competition match being of two seven minute periods. The players score a point when they can propel the ball into the of ??? on net.

As in football, "corner kicks" and "throw-ins" are taken when the ball goes out of bounds. Penalties are taken from a point four metres in front of the goal. But, all of these actions are done by striking the ball with the wheels of the bicycle.

Favourites in this year's competition re the Soviet Union and West Germany -- who placed first and second last year.

In the first day's play, West Germany easily defeated Austria six - nil, and Czechoslovakia basted France eight - two. The other countries which are represented in this year's championships are Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden.
