    A rowing eight from the Cairo Police Rowing Club on Thursday (26 December) beat University teams from the United States and United Kingdom during the fourth international Nile race held in the Egyptian capital.

    An Egyptian University team was pitted against the best from Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford in the two kilometre (1.25 mile) race.

    The Cairo Police team beat Harvard by nearly a length-and-a-half to win back the Nile Cup.

    Cambridge were third with the Yale eight fourth. Oxford came fifth with a combined Egyptian Universities team taking the last place.

    SYNOPSIS: The Nile river as it flows through Cairo, was the scene of the fourth international Nile race for rowing eights on Thursday. Teams from Egypt met crews from American and British Universities in this year's race.

    The Cairo Police Rowing Club and a combined Egyptian Universities team represented the host country. They were matched against teams from Harvard and Yale Universities from the United States and Cambridge and Oxford from Britain.

    As the boats moved along the two kilometre course it became apparent that the Cairo Police team was the strongest.

    They held off the challenge and in the end beat the Harvard team to the finish by nearly a length-and-a-half. Cambridge was third, Oxford fifth and the combined Egyptian University team came in last.
