  • Description

President Samora Machel of Mozambique and President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia have flown to Tanzania to hold talks with President Julius Nyerere in the capital, Dar Es Salaam.

Not even the three Presidents' closest advisers were allowed to attend the lengthy discussions and no details were given of the contents of the talks.

The conference between the three Presidents took place as further attempts began in the capital of Rhodesia, Salisbury, to negotiate a Rhodesian constitutional settlement.

Also in the background is the forthcoming emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss the Angolan situation.

President Kaunda arrived in Dar Es Salaam after visiting President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya.

The two Presidents issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Angola as a prelude to the formation of an Angolan Government of National Unity.

Both Tanzania and Mozambique have recognised the Soviet-backed, Luanda-based administration of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) as the "rightful government" of Angola.

The Tanzanian government has already closed down the Dar Es Salaam offices of the opponents of the MPLA, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

A statement from the Tanzanian Foreign Ministry accused the FNLA and UNITA of being "imperialist agents which had betrayed Africa by uniting with forces from South Africa".

Unconfirmed reports from Angola have said South African troops are fighting with the MPLA's rivals in southern Angola.
