  • Description

THE LONE BRITISH MARINER, SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER, ROUNDED CAPE HORN INTO THE ATLANTIC TODAY (TUESDAY), HIS TINY, STORM-BATTERED KETCH POUNDED BY HUGE WAVES WHIPPED UP BY 100 MILE (160 KM) AN HOUR WINDS. A BRITISH TELEVISION REPORTER SPOKE TO SIR FRANCIS BY RADIO FROM A CHILEAN RADIO STATION AT PUNTA ARENAS ON FRIDAY AS SIR FRANCIS NEARED THE HORN.

FIRST NEWS THAT THE 65-YEAR-OLD MARINER HAD ROUNDED THE TREACHEROUS CAPE GRAVEYARD OF COUNTLESS SAILING SHIPS CAME FROM A PRIVATE AIRLINE PILOT WHO SPOTTED THE SILVER AND WHITE KETCH RUNNING BEFORE NEAR HURRICANE FORCE WINDS UNDER A SINGLE TINY SAIL, WITH THE BRITISH FRIOZTE "H.M.S. PROTECTOR" SHADOWING HER ABOUT A HALF A MILE BEHIND.

AT THE PUNTA ARENAS RADIO STATION, A BRITISH TELEVISION REPORTER SPOKE WITH SIR FRANCIS OVER THE RADIO.
