  • Description

Ghana took a commands lead over China on the first day of two-day friendly athletic competition between the two nations in Ghana on Friday (4 July).

Thirteen events were contested in Accrs's El-Wak Sports Stadium....and Ghana won nine of them.

The Chinese female competitors were their most successful, gaining victories in the discus, the long jump and the 1500 metres.

The lone male victory came when the veteran Teng Chi-Tsien won the pole-vault.

Because the meeting was hurriedly organised, the Ghanaian team had little time for preparation and athletes from secondary school were drafted to make up the numbers. However, the performances of the young and internationally known athletes were good enough to give Ghana valuable points.
