Background: In Newcastle - one of the UK's big shipbuilding and cathedral cities - a spectacular fire sept the central area August 17 gutting a warehouse and a large block of offices.
High winds spread the flames transforming what was at first a slow-burning outbreak in one building into a raging inferno. Swirling smoke hampered the firefighters as police held back vast crowds.
The blaze strangled the city's transport services as it gutted the warehouse building and snapped overhead trolley wires.
At one time flames leapt forty four feet across the street threatening other buildings. Firemen piped a wall of water onto nearby buildings to prevent the fire spreading. At another time, falling glass damaged the hoses cutting water pressure.
