  • Description

After two days of continuous rainfall, the GBP2 million Via Olympica, a super highway specially built for the Olympic Games, has crumbled and cracked as though shaken by an earth tremor.

Pot-holes and cracks now mar this ten-mile long elevated road, built in a record six months. Overnight September 20, traffic on the four-lane no-limit highway was reduced to a one-lane trickle.

The army of workers who worked 24 hours a day to finish the Via in time for the Games' opening, have been rushed back to bolster up sagging banks. Others tackled the crumbled road surface.
