Background: The Albanian people were all on the streets on May Day for the annual international parade for workers' solidarity.

SYNOPSIS: Communist Party leader Enver Hoxha led other party leaders to the central rostrum in the Nations Martyrs boulevard in the capital -- Tirana -- to watch the parade.

Tens of thousands of people took part. This rare film from the world's smallest and most rigidly Marxist-Leninist state, shows workers, students, soldiers, children and gymnasts in the parade. Colourful floats showing industrial progress in the tiny Balkan state, and portraits of the country's leaders, were on display.

The Albanian people went to the polls at the beginning of April to cast their votes for the people's councils and courts. The result announced that 99.99 per cent backed candidates of the Democratic Front, a workers' organisation. There are no other parties. The people here exist in Europe's most isolated Communist country. Mr. Hoxha turned his back on the Soviet Kremlin some 15 years ago and since then the country has been more closely aligned with China than any other power. However, even relations with China have cooled recently.

But on May Day, always keenly observed in Albania, the air was festive. As always, however, it was relentlessly organised.
