  • Description

STUDENTS IN DAKAR ARE STILL ON STRIKE AS PROBLEMS IN SENEGAL'S STUDENTS MOVEMENT GETS WORSE. CORDONS OF POLICE HAVE RINGED DAKAR UNIVERSITY, WHERE STUDENT PICKETS HAVE BEEN IN OPERATION FOR THREE DAYS.

TWENTY STUDENTS WERE REPORTED INJURED TODAY WHEN POLICE MOVED INTO THE AREA WITH TEARGAS TO DISPERSE THE STRIKERS. THE DEMONSTRATIONS IN SENEGAL ARE THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF FRENCH STUDENT AGITATION SPREADING TO A FORMER TERRITORY.

THE SENEGALESE STUDENTS ARE PROTESTING AGAINST A GOVERNMENT DECISION TO CUT GRANTS FOR STUDIES. ALL SECONDARY SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED IN THE FACE OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS. LAST OCTOBER THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO MAKE IN SOME CASES ONLY THREE-QUARTERS OR HALF GRANTS.

DAKAR UNIVERSITY IS ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN AND MOST WIDELY RESPECTED SEATS OF HIGHER LEARNING IN FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICA.
