  • Description

Railway services throughout France were severely disrupted on Wednesday (22 August) by a strike called by unions representing about ninety per cent of engine drivers. The strike scheduled to last two days is the first of three major actions planned by the French unions.

SYNOPSIS: The forty-eight hour stoppage began on Wednesday (22 August). Suburban trains were severely cut back and four out of five of the main-line expresses were cancelled, causing severe problems for holidaymakers on their way home.

The drivers are seeking better working conditions, shorter hours and more pay. And they plan further action in early September -- just as the final group of French vacationers end their holidays. The action ends the summer truce. For years the French people and Government have ensured that nothing should spoil their summer rest, but this year the Government broke the tradition in July by warning that wage increases must be held below the inflation rate -- and so the unions have reacted with summer strike action.
