  • Description

Churches in the Argentine cities have been helping bring a little christmas cheer to slum-dwellers. In Buenos Aires several Roman Catholic priests...members of a large group of Third World priests devoted to working in the slums, but not recognised by the official Church....have been handing out extra food rations to the less fortunate of their communities, and preaching the Christmas message. The area is poor but devoutly religious. Some of the churches, such as the small but modern one seen in this coverage....in a typical shanty town...have been providing a useful link between the inhabitants and other sections of the city's wider community.

SYNOPSIS: As in many big cities of large population, the change and contrast between modern buildings and shanty-town slum areas in Buenos Aires is often sharp and sudden.

As Christmas approached during the week the streets appeared almost deserted, but local children could be seen playing among derelict buildings.

In communities such as this, teams of Roman Catholic priests have been working hard to help the under-privileged. This small but modern Church is a source of pride to those living in the are, and a meeting place for many. It's run by father Mujica, a left-wing priest who was one of a group which went to Rome recently to escort former Presidents Juan Peron back to Argentina. He's been issuing extra food to his devout parishioners.

In their homes, many have been encouraged to put up Christmas decorations and arrange small nativity tableaus, often watched and supervised by the children.
