  • Description

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Omar Sakkaf and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy arrived in Washington Saturday evening (16 February) for talks with American State Secretary Henry Kissinger. They were trying to break the deadlock on troop disengagement on the Golan Heights.

The discussions were to start at a State Department dinner the same evening but the foreign ministers were tired so the meeting was put off until Sunday (17 February).

The foreign ministers were in the United States of brief Dr. Kissinger on views expressed at an Arab summit meeting involving Algeria, Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia that was held in Algiers earlier in the week.

It is reported that the foreign ministers had a proposal that may lead to a separation of Syrian and Israeli troops on the Golan Heights. If the tension in the Middle East is eased by a disengagement of forces, the Arab nations are expected to relax their boycott of oil to the United States.

Two Trans World Airlines stewardesses were injured by an explosion on the jet carrying the foreign ministers from Paris to Washington. A coffee-making machine blew up in the rear galley. Sabotage is not suspected.
