Background: President Lon Nol made a rare public appearance on Sunday (9 March) to dispel rumours that he has fled the beleaguered Khmer capital of Phnom Penh.

The 61-year-old President, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, invited Visnews' cameraman, Neil Davis, to film his early morning stroll through the gardens of Chamcar Mon presidential palace.

Marshal Lon Nol, who is partially paralysed in both legs from a stroke, declined to comment on the deteriorating military situation in the Khmer Republic.

Earlier on Saturday (8 March), Marshal Lon Nol was reported to have asked Prime Minister Long Boret to form a new government capable of coping effectively with the Khmer Republic's military and civil problems.

But there was no confirmation of rumours circulating in Phnom Penh that the President himself would step down as part of a bargain with the United States for more aid to fight insurgent forces which have been stepping up pressure on the capital in recent weeks.

The insurgents, whose titular head is Prince Norodom Sihanouk, have said they will not negotiate with President Lon Nol or his government.

Meanwhile, in Pochentong town, near Phnom Penh's major airport, residents have taken extra precautions against increasing rocket attacks.

Shops along the town's major streets have been closed. Entrances to homes are heavily sandbagged. Most residents are taking shelter inside.

24 107mm rockets hit Pochentong town on Sunday, and eight more landed in Phnom Penh. 15 people were killed and 23 others were wounded in the attack.
