  • Description

For the first time in many years there are no illuminated Christmas decorations in the streets of Paris.

Tinsel, coloured balloons and paper decorations have replaced the intricate tracery of lights of years past.

Shoppers select their Christmas cheer from windows with the minimum of illumination. Above them on the store-fronts the usual large electric designs are missing.

Paris is not the only city to be affected. London, for example, has none of the usual decorative lighting which traditionally spans the main shopping streets.

The reason for the cuts is the high cost of energy of any form.

The cuts are voluntary an Parisians are responding to them almost completely.

The French Electricity Department - EDF - has had only one application to suspend the "no lights" ruling.
