  • Description

Representatives from forty countries are participating in the International conference on the Indian Ocean being held in New Delhi from 14-17 November. The aims of the Conference are to make the Indian Ocean a neutral zone free of foreign bases.

The Conference, organised jointly by the World Peace Council and the Afro-Asian People's Solidarity Organisation, was inaugurated on Thursday (14 November) by Indian External Affairs Minister Mr. Y.B. Chevan. Mr. Chavan stressed that the Indian Ocean should be a zone of peace and tranquillity. He said that this would contribute to the security, stability and progress of the region and to world peace.

The Conference is due to condemn the suspected building of a US nuclear base on the island of Diago Garcia and to discuss the question of other foreign military bases in the Indian Ocean.
