  • Description

A Greek Air Force officer flew his reconnaissance aircraft to Italy and sought political assylum there on Sunday (November 25th), after hearing about the military coup which overthrew President Papadopoulos.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zelios Dimitrios, 39, the father of two children, landed his F-84 aircraft at Brindisi airport then took a train to Rome. He had left the squadron he commanded, on a reconnaissance flight over the northern Greek city of Salonica and neighbouring cities.

Dimitrios told police he was against the new regime, and said it could only worsen conditions in his country.

He said he had radioed the three other pilots in his squadron soon after take-off to inform them that he planned to seek political assylum in Italy. Italian police said Dimitrio's case would have to be considered by immigration officials.
