  • Description

MICHEL JAZY, THE FRENCH RUNNER WHO HAS BROKEN THREE WORLD RECORDS THIS MONTH, SHARED IN A FOURTH LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY). HE WAS A MEMBER OF A FRENCH TEAM WHICH SET A NEW WORLD MARK OF 14 MINUTES 49 SECONDS FOR THE 4 BY 1500 METRES RELAY.

THE RECORD WAS SET AT A MEETING AT ST. MAUR, NEAR PARIS. THE FRENCH QUARTET - GERARD VERVOORT, CLAUDE NICOLAS, JAZY AND JEAN WADOUX (RUNNING IN THAT ORDER) - SLASHED NINE SECONDS OFF THE RECORD OF 14 MINUTES 58 SECONDS SET BY AN EAST GERMAN TEAM IN 1963.

CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT FOR THE RACE, AND THE RECORD-BREAKING GROUP RECEIVED VALUABLE SUPPORT FROM FOUR OTHER FRENCH RELAY TEAMS. JAZY RAN THE FASTEST LEG - COVERING THE 1500 METRES IN 3 MINUTES 40.8 SECONDS.

JAZY, WHOSE EARLIER RECORDS WERE FOR THE MILE, TWO MILES AND 3000 METRES, SAID AFTER THE RACE: "I AM VERY HAPPY. I WAS RUNNING WITH SOME OF MY FRIENDS WHO HAVE HELPED ME BEAT INDIVIDUAL WORLD RECORDS."
