    Portuguese soldiers, said to have deserted from Portuguese forces stationed in African territories, were handed over to the Algerian Red Crescent in Algiers, yesterday, 9th January.

    Among the soldiers named were Corporal Jaime Fernando Pernes Ribeiro Vasconcelos, Corporal Mauol Augusto Gomez Miranda, Private Joao Tavares Saraiva and Private Jose Teixeira.

    The man are said to have served with the Portuguese forces stationed in African and to have deserted to the PAIGC--the African Party for the Independence of Guinea (Bisseau) and the Cape Verde Islands.

    The PAIGC representative in Algiers, M. Joseph Turpin, handed them over to the Red Crescent officials in the presence of members of the Black Panther movement. The Red Crescent, in turn, plan to hand the soldiers over to the FPLN, the National Liberation Patriotic Front, said to be a Portuguese organisation based in Algiers.

    According to the FPLN Corporal Pernes Ribeiro Vasconcelos deserted in June 1970 and arrived in Algiers at the end of July; the two privates Tavares Saraiva and Teixeira deserted in October and arrived in Algiers only a few days ago. Corporal Gomez Miranda is said to have deserted in September.

    In the past Portuguese prisoners have also been taken to Algiers. One has been handed over to the International Red Cross; another is said to have refused to return to Portugal.
