  • Description

The Olympic Flame is due to reach the Greek-Turkish border on Sunday (6 August), as it is relayed along the 3,170-mile (5,100 kms) journey from Ancient Olympia to Munich for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games.

The Flame was kindled in Ancient Olympic, birthplace of the Olympic Games, on 28 July and is due to arrive at the Olympic Stadium in Munich on 26 August for the opening of the Games.

About 5,100 torchbearers are being used on the 21-day journey, with each runner carrying the Flame for 1 kilometre (1.6 miles). Usually the Flame is carried by runner from Olympia to Athens and is then transported to the site of the Games by plane or boat. This is only the second time that the Flame will be carried all the way by runner. The first time was for the Berlin Olympics in 1936.

On Thursday (3 August), the Flame passed through Salonika, where--as in all major towns, a brief ceremony was held. Runners then carried the Flame out of the city towards the Turkish border. The Flame will travel through seven countries -- Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Austria -- before reaching West Germany.
