  • Description

The former Israeli defence minister, Moshe Dayan, has said that Israel should send troops into southern Lebanon to prevent Palestinian guerrillas moving into the area in strength. He was addressing members of the United Jewish Appeal of America who were attending a convention in Jerusalem.

SYNOPSIS: More than three thousand delegates from the United States are in Israel for the convention, and on Wednesday (27 October) they took part in a march through the streets of Jerusalem. The march was to symbolise the complete identification of American Jews with the people of Israel. The marchers were joined by bands and dance groups. They had been greeted by the Mayor of Jerusalem.

The march ended at the ancient Wailing Wall where many of the demonstrators prayed, while others danced and sang. The following day Thursday, the American delegation attended Israeli Army exercises in the southern desert. They watched Israeli Phantom fighter-bombers demonstrate their low level fire power, as well as tank and infantry manoeuvres.

General Dayan, who also attended the exercise, was one of several Israeli political leaders to address the UJA delegates.

He told them that in his opinion there was only one way to prevent the Palestinian terrorists returning to the southern area of Lebanon. The Israeli government should send a military force into the area. General Dayan's remarks had particular relevance following unofficial reports the week before that light tanks supplied by Israel and crewed by Christian Lebanese forces, had crossed the border into southern Lebanon.

Army spokesmen had refused to confirm or deny reports that Israel had made weapons available to troops fighting the left-wing and Palestinian forces in Lebanon. But they had strongly denied left-wing Lebanese charges that israeli soldiers had taken part in joint patrols with right-wing Lebanese forces. Israel would like to neutralise the area known as Fataland.

General Dayan addressed the American delegates on Friday (29 October) and he warned that if the Palestinians were allowed to re-enter the area bordering northern Israel, recently developed contacts between Israel and Lebanon would cease.
