  • Description

The scene is Leopoldville June 26, spotlighted in the news by the Congo's fast-approaching independence day, June 30.

With the country's two big nationalist leaders, Lumumba and Kasavubu, installed as Premier and Head of State respectively, there is at least temporarily a more peaceful political atmosphere, and it's time to get out the bunting and for a big rehearsal of those Congolese folk dances.

There's a specially arranged programme of these dances for June 30 and July 1, and a professional Government-sponsored organisation, "Les Spectacles Populaires", will be performing them.

The dancers round the tom-toms - in their multicoloured African dress and with painted faces - are as they will appear when the show goes on.

Around them as they run through their dance routines: decor and stage scenery still awaiting the finishing touches before the great day.
