    THE FINAL STAGE OF THE RIGHT WING REBELLION IN LAOS ENDED OVER THE WEEKEND WITH THE SURRENDER OF 300 POLICE PARATROOPS IN THEIR MOUNTAIN HIDE OUT 35 MILES (56 KILOMETRES) NORTH-EAST OF VIENTIANE.THE COUP WHICH BEGAN EIGHT DAYS AGO, WAS VIRTUALLY CRUSHED BY THURSDAY AFTER FOUR DAYS OF FIGHTING, AND ON FRIDAY SIX OF THE SOLDIERS KILLED IN THE FIGHTING WERE PUBLICLY CREMATED IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE CAPITAL, VIENTIANE.THERE WAS NO CEREMONY.

    AND ON FRIDAY, DEMONSTRATING THAT THE COUNTRY'S TROUBLES WERE OVER, CROWN PRINCE VONG SAVANG ARRIVED IN VIENTIANE.LAOTIAN LEADERS WERE AT THE AIRPORT TO GREET HIM, AMONG THEM THE PRIME MINISTER, PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA AND SEVERAL MINISTERS; AND ARMY LEADERS INCLUDING GENERAL KOUPRASITH ABHAY, WHO RE-TOOK THE CAPITAL DURING THE FIGHTING, COLONEL BOUNLEUT SYKOSY, WHO WAS THOUGHT TO BE THE LEADER OF THE COUP AT FIRST BUT LATER REJOINED THE GOVERNMENT, AND GENERAL OUAMI RATHIKOUNI, THE ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF.

    THE ARRIVAL OF CROWN PRINCE VONG SAVANG IN VIENTIANE SIGNALLED A RETURN TO NORMAL LIFE AND TIME TO COUNT THE COST OF THE ABORTIVE COUP.CASUALTY ESTIMATES PUT ABOUT 60 KILLED, MAINLY CIVILIANS, AND MANY MORE WOUNDED.BLAME FOR THE COUP IS PUT LARGELY ON DEPUTY-PREMIER GENERAL PHOUMI NOSOVAN WHO HAS FLED TO THAILAND WITH SOME OF HIS LEADING SUPPORTERS.

    NOW THE FIGHTING IS OVER THE ONLY QUESTION THAT REMAINS UNSETTLED IS WHO IS TO REPLACE GENERAL PHOUMI NOSOVAN AS VICE-PREMIER IN THE LAOTIAN COALITION GOVERNMENT.
