  • Description

Heavy rain on Sunday (11 July) added to the misery of thousands left homeless by last Thursday's (8 July) earthquake, in which at least 82 people were killed.

Damage was heaviest in the port city of Valparaiso and surrounding villages. Officials reported forty per cent of the buildings destroyed in Valparaiso -- ninety per cent in the town of Illapel. Wrecking crews are busy tearing down building on the verge of collapse.

To prevent looting, the Armed Forces have declared a partial curfew in some areas. Troops are distributing food and blankets, but drinking water is in short supply. Medicines and other relief supplies have been flown in from the United States, Peru, Argentina, East Germany, and Cuba.

President Salvador Allende surveyed some of the damaged areas, including the town of Llay-Llay, on Friday (9 July).
