  • Description

III Corps, one of the crack fighting units of the South Vietnamese Army, celebrated its ninth anniversary on Tuesday (20 May) at Bien Hoa.

The unit was set up in March 1959, but only became operational a year later. Its patrol area includes three Division Tactical Areas and a Capital Military District in the eastern part of South Vietnam. The region has a wide variety of terrain, from wide plains to thick jungle and mountains which stretch to the Cambodian border. There is a population of five million to protect.

During the nine years of its operations, III Corps has fought successfully in many engagements with infiltrators and regular units of the North Vietnamese Army. But their activities have not been confined solely to combat. Men from the Corps have helped in building houses, repairing battle-damage, and carrying through rural development programmes to raise the living standards of the population.

Yesterday's anniversary was celebrated by military parades, as airforce fly-past and a display of captured weapons. Lieutenant-General Do Cao Tri, the Corps' commanding officer, and four-star general Cao Van Vien -- Chief of Staff of the South Vietnamese Army -- attended the ceremony. They laid wreaths in memory of soldiers from the Corps killed in action, and spoke on the record of the Corps' nine years of operations. Colonel Vien presented General Tri with a medal, and General Tri himself gave a medal to one of the guests at the ceremony, an American army general.
