  • Description

On Saturdays (2 August) relief official reported that about 15,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in Northern Bangladesh because of the heavy monsoon floods. In Rangpur district alone three villages with a population of about 10,000 had been flooded, and the situation in the area was described as "bad".

At least 20 people have died and about ten thousand left homeless in the monsoon floods in Northern and eastern Bangladesh. Officials from the Feni subdivision have reported that part of the highway linking the capital Dacca, to the country's major seaport at Chittagong, was underwater and closed to traffic. A number of Government teams, led by ministers, have begun an aerial survey of the flood-stricken areas.

A week ago the main rivers in Northern Bangladesh rose above their normal level and in one village some 500 people were left homeless when flood waters from the river Teetsa washed away their homes. The water had risen well above the danger level, and the Flood Emergency Centre also reported that flood waters from Assam had swollen rivers in Bangladesh.
