  • Description

More than three hundred Chinese engineers and workers are assisting in the building of one of the biggest road and bridge projects ever undertaken in the Sudan.

The road and bridge complex which spans the Blue Nile river at Wad Medani, about 100 miles (160 kilometres) from Khartoum is expected to cost more than 17 million pounds sterling (about 34 million U.S. dollars).

The project began in 1971 with the signing of a loan agreement between the Chinese government and the Sudanese. Under the agreement the Chinese have financed the construction of the road and bridge and supplied most of the materials.

Already more than 3,4000 tons of equipment, plant, machinery and constructional materials have been shipped from China to Wad Medani.

The resident engineer on the project, Sudanese Mr. Ali Elsaye said the road and bridge complex was "a unique project designed and being built by the Chinese" who, he added, are "very hard working people."
