  • Description

BILLY JEAN KING, THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, WONT HE WOMEN'S SINGLES AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (SATURDAY) FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR.

SHE DEFEATED JUDY TEGART OF AUSTRALIA IN 40 MINUTES. THE SCORE: 9-7, 7-5.

MISS TEGART STARTED BADLY AND IN THE FIRST SET WAS 1-4 DOWN BUT SHE WON THREE GAMES IN A ROW TO LEVEL AT 4-4. THEN THE STRUGGLE REALLY BEGAN WITH MRS. KING ALWAYS JUST AN ODD GAME IN FRONT. AT 8-7 THE AMERICAN CHAMPION BROKE MISS TEGART'S SERVICE FOR THE FINAL THRUST TO CLINCH THE SET.

IT WAS MISS TEGART'S FIRST WIMBLEDON FINAL AND HER 7TH APPEARANCE AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THE SECOND SET PROVED A BATTLE, TOO, WITH MRS. KING'S SUPERIORITY AND EXPERIENCE GRADUALLY GAINING THE ASCENDANCY TO WIN 7-5.

MRS. KING IS ONLY THE FOURTH WOMAN TO CAPTURE THE TITLE THREE YEARS RUNNING.

BOTH PLAYERS STORMED THE NET AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY.
