  • Description

Israel today (Tuesday 29 December) observed a two-minute silence to mark solidarity with Jews of the Soviet Union and to protest the Leningrad Hi-jack plot trial. In Jerusalem, traffic stopped, workers downed tools, and pedestrians stood at attention when sirens sounded to start the two-minute silence.

The national observance was called by the Federation of Labour. Protest meetings and demonstrations have been held in Israel since last week when two Jews were sentenced to death and nine other people--most of them Jewish--were given long prison sentences. They were charged with attempting to hi - jack an airliner in order to escape from the Soviet Union.
