    LEADERS OF EIGHT POLITICAL PARTIES MET PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN IN RAWALPINDI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO DISCUSS POSSIBLE TYPES OF CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM IN PAKISTAN.

    THE EIGHT LEADERS - MEMBERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC ACTION COMMITTEE - MET THE PRESIDENT FOR TWO HOURS AT THE PRESIDENTIAL GUEST HOUSE. THEY INCLUDE AIR MARSHAL ASGHAR KHAN, SHEIKH MUJIBUR REHMAN, THE LEADER OF THE AWAMI LEAGUE, AND NAWABZADA NASBULLAH KHAN, THE CONVENOR OF THE DEMOCRATIC ACTION COMMITTEE. THE MEETING WAS ALSO ATTENDED BY GOVERNMENT MINISTERS, INCLUDING MR. SHAHABUDDIN THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND BROADCASTING.

    THE OPPOSITION LEADERS DEMANDED A FEDERAL PARLIAMENTARY FORM OF GOVERNMENT FOR THE COUNTRY, GIVING REGIONAL AUTONOMY TO EAST AND WEST PAKISTAN. SOME OF THE PARTY LEADERS ALSO ASKED FOR ELECTIONS IN PAKISTAN ON THE BASIS OF AN ADULT FRANCHISE.

    THE MEETING IS A RESUMPTION OF A CONFERENCE ON DEMOCRATIC REFORMS WHICH OPENED ON 25 FEBRUARY, A FEW DAYS AFTER PRESIDENT AYUB ANNOUNCED THAT HE WOULD NOT BE A CANDIDATE IN THE 1970 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.

    THE EIGHT PARTIES REPRESENTED AT THE MEETING ARE MAINLY FROM THE RIGHT WING OF THE PAKISTANI POLITICAL SPECTRUM. THE LEADERS OF TWO SOCIALIST PARTIES REFUSED TO ATTEND - MR. BHUTTO AND MR. BHAGHANI.
