  • Description

Spokesmen for both North and South Vietnam have held press conferences in Paris to tell the world what their respective governments feel about the ceasefire due to be signed on Saturday.

For the north, negotiator Le Duc Tho said the agreement culminated the Vietnamese people's thirteen years of struggle against American Imperialism. He added that the agreement contained no secret protocols of any kind, and he claimed there was no basic difference between the October ceasefire agreement which the Americans wouldn't sign, and the agreement jut announced.

The South Vietnamese spokesman, Foreign Minister Tran Van Lam said his government agreed to the new accord because it won satisfaction on at least three key points. These were the definition of the Council of National Concord and Reconciliation which is to organise elections, respect by both North and South of the demilitarised zone, and deletion of any mention of the Provisional Revolutionary Government...the Viet Cong's political arm...from the Peace Accord.
